This past weekend, the baseball team made the voyage to Wawasee to play in the Wawasee Invitational. The four team tournament featured Heritage, Lowell, South Bend Rylie, and the host team Wawasee. In the Patriots first game, they played Lowell on a less than impressive baseball field. The conditions did not bother the Pats, however, as they went on to defeat Lowell in walk off fashion. In the bottom of the 7th, Billy Lomow came up to bat with a runner on second. He slapped a hit into the shallow outfield, scoring the runner and claiming victory with a score of 7 to 6. Billy also picked up the win as a pitcher as he closed out the last few innings.
In the championship game, the team met up against South Bend Riley. The game sped by as both pitchers did not surrender many hits. The end result was 2-0, in favor of the Patriots. Senior Jacque Jacquay was selected as player of the game as he pitched a complete game shut out, striking out 11 and only surrendering 2 hits. Joel Deakins also went 3 for 3 at the plate for the Patriots. This was a well fought victory, and should lead to a streak of wins ahead. The Patriots hope to go on a run, especially with conference play starting this week against South Adams and Southern Wells. With 6 games in the next 5 days, the teams’ depth will be tested at the pitching position. Senior Billy Lomow had this to say about the tournament, “It was a well fought tournament, and it was a lot of fun. It was a great weekend to play, and I am happy that we came out victorious.” The boys will play South Adams on the 26th, Adams Central on the 27th, Southern Wells on the 28th, Concordia the 29th, and a double header at South Side on the 30th.
