Multiple Teams · Girls CC WIns Bellmont; Boys 3rd

The cross country team got off to an amazing start on Tuesday night. They are showing all of Allen County that they are a legit team.

The girls team won the Bellmont Invitational, beating eight other teams. Five Patriots finished in the top 20: Lilly Biggins (9), Katie Graham (12), Rylee Jarrell (15), Katelyn Sebring (16), and Anna Grace Whitacre (20). This is the best finish that the girls team has had in the event in their short six year history.

The boys team proved with their performance that last year was not a fluke. They dominated during the meet, finishing in 3rd place. They had 3 runners finish in the top 10: Devin Schmenk (5), Jack Beauchot (7), and Andrew Kohrman (8).

The CC program continues to establish itself after last season saw the girls finish second in the ACAC and the boys ending up with the championship by a margin of seventeen points. Schmenk put an exclamation point on the season, making a run to semi state. Both teams are hungry and well prepared for another chance to advance deep into the postseason.

Rising sophomore, Katelyn Sebring said, “Since we got second place last year, it makes me want to work so much harder. Like, I didn’t wanna walk until I had to because I know I have to work hard to be up front. So it motivated me to try hard no matter what, even in conditioning.” Miranda Gerardot said, “This year I’ve tried to push myself even more than last year. I also want to cheer everyone else on so they also do their best.”

“Some of our goals are to go to Semi State as team and to stay motivated because it’ll be worth it in the end,” said Nick Smith, a junior from last year’s boys ACAC championship team.

“We’ve had 6 a.m. practices all throughout summer in 80 degree weather. We were doing that daily. With winning the ACAC title last year, it will motivate us a ton. We are the favorites to win again and go far into the state tournament. So we will all push harder than we ever had before,” said junior Devin Schmenk.

The teams will be back in action this Saturday, Aug. 26.
